Site #13 Eagle Cliff near Artist’s Rock
Introduction
Thomas Worthington Whittredge and Sanford Robinson Gifford probably painted the Shawangunks more memorably than any of their contemporaries, especially the view from Eagle Cliff. Today it is reached by walking the Eagle Cliff Road a short distance from the Mohonk Mountain House. Whittredge was more typically than Gifford an interpreter of woodland interiors. In his view from Eagle Cliff he included at left a gloomy grove of tall pines and sheltering boulders where three woodsmen, probably hunters, settle down for the night around their campfire. These features and, at extreme right, the tips of the indelible Trapps, the artist spanned with violet clouds and a yellow bar of twilight sky crossing the picture near the horizon. Amid the haze of the remote valley, the Hudson River, like a slender, lazy bolt of lightning, is barely descried, although it is not actually visible from this location. This work and an ambitious painting of the Trapps by Gifford were exhibited to high acclaim in New York City in consecutive years near the end of the Civil War.
